In an effort to reduce red light running and increase traffic safety, the city of Austin has been installing CCTV cameras and License Plate Recognition (LPR) security cameras at stoplights across the Austin area. The traffic enforcement initiative known as "Keep Austin Safe," was established in 2007 by the City Council. The red light CCTV cameras encourage safer behavior from motorists and reduce crashes, injuries, and loss of life caused when drivers run red lights.
